Order phenolic plywood online?

Phenolic plywood, also known as phenolic plywood, is a plate material that is very strong, smooth and flat. It was developed to make concrete formwork. Nowadays, it is used for many more applications, but its origin is still reflected in the name. Would you like to know more about Phenolic plywood and how we at TOSIZE.se deliver this type of board material? Then read on!

The origin of phenolic plywood

As mentioned above, phenolic plywood was developed for making concrete formwork. The sheets used for this purpose should be flat, not absorb moisture and preferably reusable. These properties are important for many more applications, which is why you see Phenolic Plywood in many other places nowadays.

The construction of Phenolic plywood

Phenolic plywood is made of plywood, a sheet material consisting of several thin layers of wood veneer glued together crosswise. The thin layers of wood veneer that are used can warp in the direction of the grain, and by gluing them together crosswise, the panel becomes a lot stronger and also warps less quickly. This makes plywood strong enough for constructive applications and you often see it used in the building industry.

The properties of the plastic top layer

The difference between Phenolic plywood and multiplex is the plastic top layer of Phenolic plywood. This plastic top layer is made of phenolic resin and is very smooth and rock hard. Thanks to this layer, Phenolic plywood is scratch-resistant and impact-resistant.

The plastic top layer is available in different colours. The most popular colours are brown, black and white. Colours such as green and red are also an option for some variants of Phenolic plywood. There is even a non-slip variant of Phenolic plywood with a non-slip top layer on one side.

The gluing of the veneer layers

Phenolic Plywood panels are WBP bonded. A WBP bonding, also known as exterior bonding, stands for "Water Boiled Proof". Panel material with the WBP mark has passed a special test in which it is placed in boiling water for 72 hours. If the adhesive does not come off during this test, the board is rated WBP. The term WBP is therefore a quality mark, guaranteeing that the glue between the veneer layers will not come loose in damp indoor and outdoor conditions. Whether the board material can actually be used outdoors depends on the type of wood used.

The types of wood used for Phenolic plywood

The plywood core can be made of different types of wood. Each wood species gives unique properties to the panel material. Let's go through the possibilities for Phenolic plywood.

The types of wood from which Phenolic plywood is made are:

  • Birch
  • Tropical Hardwood

Sawing in different shapes

Phenolic plywood can be cut to size in various forms, so you can easily apply the board material in various ways.

Whole sheets of Phenolic plywood come in the shape of a rectangle. A rectangle can also be used in most ways. Cutting boards to size in the shape of a rectangle can therefore be used in many ways: interior finishes, floors, table tops and much more can be made from rectangular shaped board material.

Square boards of Phenolic plywood are, just like rectangles, also often used in projects. You see them for example in boxes, tables, sheds and many other projects.

Rounding or chamfering corners

When you cut squares or rectangles from Phenolic plywood, the corners are very sharp. If desired, the corners can be beveled or rounded. This can be done for all corners or for the two corners of one side.

Chamfering edges

Square and rectangular cut-to-size board material can also be chamfered on one side. This can be done for a long side or a short side, resulting in a kind of wing shape.

A triangle can also be cut to size from Phenolic plywood. This triangle can be made from a square, a rectangle or a symmetrical triangle.

If you do not want any corners in your sheet material, you can have it sawn into a circle. Circular sheets can be used for tables, but also for decoration. It is also possible to saw half circles.

A trapezium is a triangle whose upper point is missing. The upper side is therefore shorter than the lower side, so that the left and right sides are slanted.

A parallelogram is a rectangle where the short sides run diagonally in the same way. The plate therefore looks 'shifted'.

An overview of all the shapes we can saw with sheet material can be found on the shapes page.

With mitre sawn board material, you can make invisible joints. With mitre sawn board material, the end edges are sawn diagonally at a 45 degree angle. You can also determine the angle yourself, with a maximum of 46 degrees.

You can round off the sharp edges of the head edges. You can do this for the bottom side, top side and bottom and top side. When ordering, you can determine the radius yourself.

The ends can also be chamfered. As with the rounding of the ends, you can do this for the top, bottom and top and bottom. Instead of the radius, enter the depth.

Hollow section

When making a hollow profile, the top and bottom edges (or one of the two) are hollowed out. As a result, the middle sticks out, which gives a modern and sleek appearance.

For a classic finish, you can choose a quarter-round finish. A rounding is applied, but is not completely connected, leaving a straight edge in the middle.

More information can be found on our page for sheet material finishes.
